John Clark, a middle-aged estate lawyer in Chicago, loves his family, including his wife Beverly. However, their busy schedules and two decades of marriage have left him feeling unfulfilled. Every night on the el train ride home, he notices a beautiful young woman staring out of the window of Miss Mitzi's Dance Studio, which specializes in ballroom dancing. This woman, Paulina, intrigues him enough to visit the studio one evening. There, he meets Paulina, a former world-class ballroom dancer and one of the instructors. Despite the beginner group dance lessons being taught by Miss Mitzi herself, and not Paulina, John decides to sign up.
As time goes on, John becomes involved in the lives of his classmates at the studio: Vern, who wants to learn to dance for his upcoming wedding, and Chic, who wants to impress the ladies. He also becomes acquainted with the studio's competitive amateur dancers, including the opinionated and brash Bobbie, who is looking for a dance partner, and another person who hides behind a mask and just wants to show his true colors to the world.
Paulina, although initially vowing not to fraternize with the students, slowly becomes involved in their lives as well. Through this, John realizes what he was looking for when he first spotted Paulina in the window. Similarly, each person at the dance studio is looking for their place in life with the right person, including Paulina.
Unfortunately, John's growing involvement with the dance studio leads to Beverly suspecting him of having an affair, and he may not get the happy ending he desires.
